According to the study conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture (MAG), 140,755 producer families were identified as having at least one pig on their farms, with an inventory of 492,796 head, concentrated in the North Caribbean Coast, South Caribbean Coast, Jinotega, and Matagalpa. Of the total herd, 61.8% consists of pigs under 6 months old, while 38.2% are pigs over 6 months old.

Additionally, 63,398 pigs were identified in technified and semi-technified farms, which, when added to the farm inventory, brings the national herd to a total of 556,194 pigs. Of these, an average of 24,000 head per month are sent to slaughter for national consumption, thus helping to reduce the gap toward Food Sovereignty.
