During its 81st representatives' world meeting, that is taking place currently, the World Organisation for Animal Health has recognised Peru as free from foot-and-mouth disease.

The decisions with these acknowledgements were evaluated and approved by the OIE's Scientific Commission for animal diseases.

The Minister of Agriculture, Milton von Hesse, affirmed that the measure of the recognition of Peru as a country free from foot-and-mouth disease will definitely help to encourage the exportations of the Peruvian stockbreeding sector, and this will provide a potential market for the small producers in this country. He specified that Peru, together with Chile, are the only countries in the region that have the OIE certification, after 40 years of efforts carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture (Minag), through the Agricultural Health National Service (Senasa) and the stockbreeders' organisations in this country. “Without a doubt, this is good news, and this measure will benefit the national livestock sector and also the foreign trade”, he maintained.
