The extension of origin labeling of meat in Germany came into force on February 1, 2024. It is now mandatory for points of sale to label the origin of fresh, chilled, or frozen pork, sheep, goat, and poultry meat that is not packaged. Until now, the regulation only applied to unpackaged beef and packaged meat.

According to Federal Minister Cem Özdemir: "Customers can now make a conscious choice in favor of domestic products and thus support German livestock farming. 'Made in Germany' is not only synonymous with quality but also with higher animal welfare and environmental standards compared to those in many other countries."

The EU Commission is currently considering extending mandatory origin labeling to other foods. In principle, BMEL supports the EU Commission's plans. However, as they have not yet presented a legislative proposal, BMEL is looking into the possibility of extending origin labeling for meat in catering.
