Brazil: Paraná leads increase in pig production in 2023 with record numbers

Paraná produced 660.63 thousand more pigs in 2023 with greater national growth, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

Paraná produced 12 million head of swine in 2023 (12,138,752) and occupies second place in the national ranking, with 21.2%, behind Santa Catarina (29.5%) and ahead of Rio Grande from the South (17%). The number of pigs slaughtered grew 5.7% (11,478,124 in 2022), another historic record. The State also increased national participation with the latest investments in the sector – in 2022 it was 20.4%.

In 2023, 57.17 million more heads of pigs were slaughtered in the country, representing an increase of 1.3% compared to 2022 (707.33 million pigs), also a new record.

Production was boosted by increases in slaughter in nine of the 24 producing states. The biggest increases occurred in Paraná (+660.63 thousand heads), Santa Catarina (+631.22 thousand heads), and Mato Grosso do Sul (+64.29 thousand heads). On the other hand, there were drops in Minas Gerais (-266.10 thousand heads), São Paulo (-166.97 thousand heads), Mato Grosso (-126.92 thousand heads), Goiás (-54.25 thousand heads), and Rio Grande do Sul (-20.85 thousand heads).
