During the ceremony for the 30th institutional anniversary of the Association of Pig Producers of Peru (APP), the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Mr. Juan Manuel Benites, declared that the actions of the sector are oriented towards doubling the consumption of pork.
According to the figures, currently, in Peru, there is an average consumption of 5.5 kg per person and year, a level much lower than that of cities like Hong Kong (75 kg), or nations of the EU (that exceed 40 kg) or even Chile (that reaches 26 kg).
Benites pointed out that the actions adopted by the sector to increase the consumption have been the institutionalisation of the “National Day of the Peruvian Pork Rinds” that, was made official, through a Ministerial Order, for every third Saturday of June. At the same time, he declared that the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MINAGRI), through the Programme of Compensations for Competitiveness (AGROIDEAS), has allowed the co-financing of business plans in the regions of Apurímac, Arequipa, Cajamarca, Huancavelica, San Martín and Tacna for an amount of 2.2 million of Peruvian soles.
The Ministry added that these business plans are oriented towards the technification of the breeding, the inprovement of the infrastructures and the genetic improvement. Likewise, the Minister informed that additionaly, the Ministry is managing, with the Interamerican Development Bank (BID), the extension of the Project for the Control and Eradication of Pig Diseases for a period of 5 years.
In the anniversary ceremony, the chief of the National Agricultural Health Service (SENASA), Mr. Jorge Barrenechea; the president of the Association of Pig Producers of Peru, Mr. Guillermo Vidal; the manager of this professional association, Ms. Ana María Trelles, among other authorities and representatives of the sector participated.
