Peru's pork imports increased in 2023

There were significant increases in imports of pork products and by-products from Chile and the U.S. and considerable volumes of Brazilian pork.

Imports of pork products and by-products totaled 16,235 tons in 2023, an increase of 59.4% compared to 2022.

More than 60% of the products imported in 2023 came from Chile, while the United States and Brazil accounted for 12% and 11%, respectively. Together these three countries accounted for 85% of Peru's pork imports.

Chilean pork imports increased in volume by 86.7% over the previous year consolidating 9,929 tons in 2023. U.S. pork imports increased by 10.4%.

In 2023, imports of Brazilian pork reached 1,831 tons.

Six tariff items accounted for 85% of total imports in 2023, corresponding to boneless frozen pork (35%), other frozen pork (15%), frozen chops and ribs (12%), pork fat without rendering (8%), bacon with frozen lean parts (8%), and bone-in legs and shoulders (8%).

It is estimated that apparent pork consumption in Peru was composed of 92% domestic production and 8% imports in 2023.
