Data from the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) showed a decrease of P14.95 or 6.84 percent per kilogram to P203.74 in October from P218.50 in July.
The fall in pork price was attributed to lean months that weakened the buying capacity of the consumers. Moreover, the effect of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Luzon created a scare among consumers despite the government’s information drive that it is safe to eat pork. Come Christmas season, the PVO expects pork prices to go up as demand is expected to pick up.
The PVO has made efforts to help the local swine industry with marketing support through provision of post-harvest facilities to local hog raisers associations and the creation of linkages to buyers from nearby provinces like Cebu and Aklan.
Backyard raisers have been allowed to continue their delivery of live pigs to Cebu amidst strict quarantine protocols imposed by the provincial government of Cebu allowing them to ship 2,000 live pigs in October.
