At the beginning of June 2023, the pig inventory was 9436.3 thousand head, down 174.9 thousand head (1.8%) from the same period of 2022, and down 187 thousand head, or 2.0% compared to December 2022.
Compared to June 2022, the breeding sow herd decreased by 15.7 thousand head (-2.6%) to 590.6 thousand head, of which the inventory of gestating sows increased by 4.2 thousand head (+1.0%) to 421.9 thousand head. Compared to December 2022, the number of breeding sows decreased by 1.9 thousand head (-0.3%), with gestating sows increasing by 17.1 thousand head, or 4.2%.
Compared to the pig inventory structure at the beginning of June 2022, in 2023 the share of piglets increased by 1.0%, growers by 0.3%, and gestating sows by 0.1%. In contrast, the share of pigs for slaughter decreased by 1.3% and pigs for breeding decreased by 0.1%.
From January-June 2023 (according to preliminary data), imports of live pigs totaled 3616.8 thousand head, 10.3% higher than in the same period a year ago, of which imports of piglets and growers increased by 10.7%. The average weight of one imported head during the period was 33.2 kilograms, compared to 35.6 kilograms in 2022.
The largest shares of the national pig population were held by the provinces of Wielkopolska (32.4%), Mazovia (14.2%), Łódź (10.1%), as well as Kujawsko-Pomorskie (8.7%) and Pomorskie (8.7%). The provinces with the smallest shares were Lubuskie (0.8%), Podkarpackie (0.8%), and Małopolskie (1.1%).
