The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that 27.5 million pigs were kept in Germany as at 3 November 2017. According to provisional results of the semi-annual survey, the pig population increased by approximately 378,000, or 1.4%, from May 2017. Prior to this, the pig population steadily decreased from roughly 28.3 million in November 2014 to 27.2 million in May 2017.

The recent rise is mainly due to an increase in the number of pigs for fattening (+2.8%).
