Pig herd growth in 2023
At the end of 2023, the pig inventory is estimated at 26.342 million pigs (not including more than 4 million nursing piglets), an increase of 4.2% over the same period in 2022. Since 2019, the pig population has seen an average annual growth rate of 6.94%.
It is estimated that the total pork production will reach 4.866 million tons (live slaughter weight) in 2023, an increase of 7.2% over the same period in 2022. Since 2019, pork production has seen an average annual growth rate of 4.3%.
Domestically produced pork accounts for 62.1% of the total meat output of livestock in 2023.
Raw materials prices
The average price of feed ingredients in 2023 was less than the average price in 2022. Corn prices decreased the most (-12.5%). However, compared to 2020 (before the impact of the Covid pandemic), feed prices are still 32-46% higher depending on the type.

The average price of live pigs for slaughter in 2023 is estimated at 53.8 thousand VND/kg live, 3.2 thousand VND lower than the average in 2022.
Imports and exports
In 2023, Vietnam imported an estimated 116 thousand tons of pork, accounting for 3% of total domestic pork consumption and an increase of about 1.8% compared to 2022. In addition, Vietnam imported about 122.45 thousand tons of pork byproducts, an increase of 76.7% compared to 2022.
In the first 11 months of 2023, Vietnam exported 999 female pigs and 68 male pigs, 5,700 piglets, and 700 slaughter pigs.
Forecast for pork production in 2024
According to estimates by the Department of Livestock, pork production in Vietnam in 2024 is estimated to reach 4.9 million tons, an increase of 4% compared to 2023.
