In the third trimester of 2017, 11.03 million pigs were slaughtered in Brazil: an increase by 3.9% with respect to the previous trimester, and by 2.9% in comparison with the same period in 2016. This is the trimester with the best figures since official records of livestock production statistics began in 1997.
According to the IBGE’s Livestock Activity supervisor, Ms Ângela Lordão, the increase in exports and the pork price reduction contributed to this result. “Luckily, Brazil is recovering the confidence of the importing countries, after the ‘Carne Fraca’ Operation in early 2107. Another reason has been the fall in the price of maize, a staple in pig feed, thanks to the fruitful harvest this year”, she has explained.
Brazil exported 160,191 tonnes of fresh pork in the third trimester of 2017: 14.2% more than in the previous trimester. The invoicing added up USD392,393 million, an increase by 4.7% in comparison with the second semester. Russia was the main destination, with 44% of the exports.
