A new animal welfare report from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration with figures from 2021 has been published showing that just under one in three control visits to pig herds triggered a sanction (31.4%). This is a slight improvement from the 33% in 2020, but according to Food Minister Jacob Jensen, this is still too high. In the coming months, the Minister will meet with a number of stakeholders and experts to delve into why standards aren't being met and how to improve animal welfare.
There are general problems with high numbers of docked pigs and piglet mortality. Piglet mortality, including stillborn piglets, is at 23.4%. This corresponds to approximately 10.7 million piglet deaths per year.
