A record number of African swine fever outbreaks has been reported in Poland this year. By October 18, the disease had been found on as many as 112 pig farms.
During the first five months of 2021, only two outbreaks were reported. With the onset of the summer season, the number of outbreaks began to increase sharply, with most outbreaks occurring in September (37 outbreaks), slightly fewer in August (33 outbreaks), and July (29 outbreaks). This alarming trend changed in October with only 2 outbreaks of ASF detected so far this month, as of the 18th.

The largest number of ASF outbreaks was reported in the Subcarpathian voivodeship with 55 (followed by Warmian-Masurian with 16 outbreaks, and Lower Silesian with 12 ASF outbreaks), but interestingly enough, the Subcarpathian voivodeship did not have the greatest number of pigs on affected farms; it was fourth in this respect (with 3,688 pigs).

The greatest number of pigs involved in the outbreaks was in Lubusz (5 outbreaks with 16,667 pigs), followed by Greater Poland (9 outbreaks with 5,604 pigs) and Warmian-Masurian (16 outbreaks with 4,115 pigs).
Number of pigs on farms affected by ASF
This correlates with the characteristics of the farms in the given region. In the Subcarpathian voivodeship, farms are dispersed and there are many small pig farms, while in Lubusz voivodeship there are more industrialized farms.
