In December 2024, the swine inventory was 9,078.3 thousand head, down 7.1% compared to December 2023. The decline affected all groups of pigs, including breeding sows, whose number decreased by 9.6% to 599.7 thousand head. The number of gestating sows declined 9.9% to 411.4 thousand head. Compared to June 2024, the number of breeding sows decreased by 6.7%.
The structure of pigs in December 2024 was as follows: piglets (19.6%), young pigs from 20 to 50 kg (28.8%), pigs for slaughter (44.9%) and breeding pigs (6.7%). Compared to December 2023, the share of pigs for slaughter increased (+1.3%), while the share of piglets (-0.9%), young pigs, and breeding sows decreased (-0.2%).
Imports of live pigs in January-November 2024 totaled 7,725.6 thousand head, an increase of 11.2% year-on-year. Imports of piglets and young pigs increased by 13.5%, and the average weight of an imported head fell to 32.4 kg (from 33.7 kg in 2023).
The greatest swine inventories were recorded in the Wielkopolskie (26.7%), Mazowieckie (15.2%), Łódzkie (12%), Kujawsko-Pomorskie (9.5%), and Pomorskie (8.9%) provinces. The least numerous were in the Lubuskie (0.9%), Podkarpackie (0.9%), and Małopolskie (1.1%) provinces.
In December 2024, the price of live hogs was PLN 6.26/kg, down 1.5% month on month and 16.1% year on year.
An increase in the number of outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) was recorded in 2024. The Chief Veterinary Inspectorate recorded 44 outbreaks (up from 30 in 2023), involving 27,399 pigs (up from 8,505 in 2023). The threat of ASF continues to persist.
