Portugal: Decrease in imports of pigs for slaughter

The import of pigs for slaughter decreased by 4.1% in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

Imports of pigs for slaughter decreased by 4.1% in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, from 518,105 head last year to 497,010 head this year.

Imports of pork and pork products increased 4.3% from 94,481 tons in 2023 to 98,579 tons in 2024. Pork imports are broken down as follows:

  • Frozen pork increased 2.3% from 12,208 tons in 2023 to 12,486 tons in 2024;
  • Fresh/chilled pork increased by 6.6%, from 34,536 tons in 2023 to 36,821 tons in 2024;
  • Offal decreased from 711 tons in 2023 to 584 tons in 2024.

Import value increased by 1.6% in 2024 (€276.632 million) compared to 2023 (€280.996 million) due to higher prices.
