According to the data published by the GPP, supplied by the INE as preliminary data, regarding the pig slaughterings in Portugal and their trade in the first nine months of 2017, the figures dropped with respect to the same period in 2016.
The data regarding the slaughterings in the first nine months of 2017 show a decrease by 5.2% regarding the total number of heads (3,987,711 in 2017 versus 4,205,714 in 2016), itemised as follows: 3,135,340 fattening pigs (-6.1% than in 2016); 835,318 piglets (-1.1% in comparison with 2016); and 17,053 breeders (-28.7% than in 2016).
The weights at slaughter decreased by 6.8% in the case of the fattening pigs and by 1.2% in the case of the piglets. In percent figures, this means that the slaughtered animals weighed less than those slaughtered in the same period in 2016, because the percent drop in the weights was larger than the percent drop in the number of pigs slaughtered.
