Portugal: increase in pig slaughterings

During the first nine months of 2014, a total of 3,889,323 pigs have been slaughtered. This entails a rise by 2.2%.

According to the data of the "Suínos News", a bulletin published by the Ministry of Agriculture of Portugal, during the first nine months of 2014 a total of 3,889,323 pigs have been slaughtered. This entails a rise by 2.2% in terms of numbers and by 2.9% in terms of volume (264,157 tonnes in 2014; 256,758 tonnes in 2013) with respect to the same period in 2013.

If these figures are broken down, 3,202,880 fattenig pigs have been slaughtered (an increase by 1.5% with respect to the same period in 2013), with a total of 255,534 tonnes (+2.6%). Regarding piglets, 655,896 have been slaughtered (+4.7%, 626,339 in 2013), with a weight of 4,510 tonnes (4.9% more than in 2013). The slaughtering of breeders showed a very significant increase, reaching 30,547 heads, which entails 34.8% more than 2013 (22,654 heads).
