According to preliminary data provided by the INE and published by the GPP, the number of pigs slaughted between January and March 2020 has dropped slightly, by 0.2% (1,289,033 vs. 1,291,640 pigs between January-March 2020 and 2019, respectively). Slaughter weight fell by the same proportion, 0.2% (91,807 vs. 92,034 t).
With regard to piglets there was a 5.7% decrease in the number of head slaughtered in the first trimester of 2020 (233,151 animals) compared to that of 2019 (247,346 animals). The slaughter weight also decreased by 3.2%.
In relation to breeding animals, 10,845 head (+ 44.9%) were slaughtered during this same 3-month period in 2020 compared to 7,486 heads in 2019. The weight also increased by 49%, from 1,144 tonnes in 2019 to 1,704 tonnes in 2020.
With regard to fattening pigs, 1,036,808 head were slaughtered in the first trimester of 2019 and 1,045,037 head in 2020, representing an increase of 0.8% in the volume slaughtered. In terms of weight, 89,189 t in 2019 were slaughtered and 88,457 t in 2020, representing a decrease of 0.8% in the tonnes slaughtered.
