According to preliminary data published by the GPP (Gabinete de Planeamento, Políticas e Administração Geral), provided by the Portuguese National Statistics Institute (INE), regarding Portugal's international trade, the export of live pigs decreased by 13.2% in the period between January and March 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. In the period there were 140,499 head exported in 2021 compared to 121,959 head in 2022.
As for pork, Portugal saw a reduction in exports by 23.3% for the period compared to the same period in 2021, with total foreign sales of 21,258.6 tons in 2021 compared to 27,698.7 tons in 2021. Frozen pork sales decreased by 58.3%, from 11,519.9 tons in 2021 to 4,798.3 tons in 2022. As for fresh and chilled pork, there was also a 30.6% decrease in exports compared to this period in 2021, from 4,372.1 tons in 2021 to 3,035.4 tons in 2022. Offal sales increased by 15.2%, from 2,245.3 tons in 2021 to 2,586.7 tons in 2022.
Export turnover decreased by 32.5% in trade value, as it had been EUR 54,157.1 thousand in 2021 and in 2022 EUR 36,577.2 thousand.
