The total number of hogs slaughtered in Portugal in 2024 reached 3,958,263 hogs, an increase of 3.1% (+118,998 head) compared to 2023 (839,265 hogs). This is according to data published by the Portuguese Office of Planning, Policies, and General Administration, provided by the National Institute of Statistics as preliminary data.
The weight slaughtered also increased, by 5.7%, meaning that heavier hogs were slaughtered in 2024 than in 2023. (321,813.3 tons in 2023 vs. 340,202.3 in 2024) This gives an average carcass weight of 85.95 kg in 2024 compared to 83.8 kg in 2023.

There was a 3.9% drop in piglet slaughter (-53,436 head) in 2024 compared to 2023,(1,304,997 vs. 1,357,433 head). The weight slaughtered also fell by 3.9% from 9,620.2 tons in 2023 to 9,242.7 tons in 2024, which means that the average weight remained the same, at approximately 7.1 kg per carcass.
As for cull sows, 35,579 head (+8.5%) were slaughtered in 2024 compared to 32,784 head in 2023. The total weight increased by 10.6% from 4,843.1 tons in 2023 to 5,355.5 tons in 2024. The average slaughter weight was 150.5 kg carcass.
A total of 5,298,839 head were slaughtered and approved for consumption in the 12 months of 2024, up 1.3% on 2023 when 5,229,482 head were slaughtered. The total slaughter weight was 354,800.5 tons, 5.5% more than in 2023 when 336,276.6 tons were approved for consumption.
