European agriculture is facing unprecedented challenges such as extreme weather events, high production costs, new diseases, war conflicts, and increased imports. These factors, together with stringent production requirements and increased administrative burdens, constantly put pressure on the agricultural sector. The Hungarian Presidency will promote discussions to create a competitive, sustainable, and resilient European food system that is farmer-friendly.

The Hungarian EU Presidency in the second half of 2024 focuses on strengthening a competitive, sustainable, and crisis-resilient European food system. In the agricultural field, the discussion on how the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) can improve the competitiveness of farmers and the food system will be promoted. Emphasis will be placed on generational renewal and preserving traditional rural livelihoods.

Although the report does not mention the swine industry specifically, the agricultural policies discussed include aspects that directly impact this sector, such as reducing production costs, adapting to sustainability standards, and improving animal welfare conditions. In addition, innovative techniques and the infrastructure needed to improve efficiency and sustainability will be discussed.

The Hungarian Presidency will also address climate and environmental challenges, encouraging sustainable agricultural practices that contribute to mitigating climate change and protecting biodiversity. This includes discussions on how the new green architecture of the CAP can support these objectives.

Special attention will be given to reducing food waste and implementing efficient waste management practices. Conferences and events are planned to share best practices in these areas, fostering a collaborative approach among member states.

The Council of the European Union also held an informal lunchtime discussion on the “preservation of European food traditions”. This conversation focused on how food innovations, such as cultured meat and plant-based foods, could affect European culinary traditions. The Hungarian Presidency stressed the importance of protecting food traditions in the midst of these changes and called for an exchange of views between the agriculture ministers of the Member States on this subject.
