In 2021, companies in Germany produced just under 17.0% more meat substitutes than in the previous year, and production increased by 62.2% compared to 2019, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). In 2021, 97,900 tons of meat substitute products were produced, compared with around 83,700 tons in the previous year and 60,400 tons two years earlier. The value of these products increased by 22.2% year-on-year in 2021 to 458.2 million euros (2020: 374.9 million euros). Compared to 2019, the value increased by 68.0%. At that time, it was 272.8 million euros. The number of companies producing in Germany also increased from 34 in 2019 and 2020 to 44 in 2021.
Value of meat around 80 times that of meat substitutes
Despite this increase, the value of meat substitutes turns out to be relatively low compared to meat products. In 2021, the value of meat and meat products produced in Germany was 35.6 billion euros - around 80 times the value of meat substitutes. However, since 2019 - for the second year in a row - a decline has been observed in the value of meat products: In 2021, it decreased by 7.8% compared to the previous year, and by 11.3% compared to 2019. In 2019, the value of meat production in Germany had reached 40.1 billion euros, the highest value in ten years.
Meat consumption in Germany at a low
In Germany, less and less meat has been consumed recently: according to the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE), per capita consumption was 55.0 kilograms per capita in 2021. This was a decrease of 12% compared to 2011 (62.8 kilograms per capita) and the lowest value since calculations began in 1989.
