The first case of African swine fever (ASF) in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna was detected last November 2023, affecting a wild boar in the province of Pacienza. In January 2024, the disease was detected in a wild boar in the province of Parma, alerting producers of the well-known "Prosciutto di Parma" PDO.
On April 19, the first case within the so-called "typical" production area of "Prosciutto di Parma" was confirmed in the Varano de' Melegari municipality, generating concern for the PDO.
The "typical area" where "Prosciutto di Parma" ham is produced covers part of the province situated at least 5 km south of the Via Emilia highway and extends southwards to a maximum altitude of 900 m. The Enza and Stirone rivers form the eastern and western borders of the area. The geographical area from which the raw material can be obtained is wider than the "typical area'" and includes the administrative territory of the following Italian regions: Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lombardy, Piedmont, Molise, Umbria, Tuscany, Marche, Abruzzi, and Lazio.
The latest outbreak in the province of Parma has increased the risk level. This led to extensions of the restricted zones I and II of Annex I of the Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/594.
According to Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/1269 of 29 April 2024, for the province of Parma the restricted zones cover the following areas:
- Restricted zone I: Lesignano de' Bagni, Soragna, Montechiarugolo, Fontanellato, Parma, Fidenza, Fontevivo, Langhirano, San Secondo Parmense, Traversetolo, Tizzano Val Parma, Palanzano, Neviano degli Arduini, Monchio delle Corti, Corniglio.
