The "European Green Deal" reaffirms the European Commission's commitment to address climate and environment-related challenges. In this context, the European Commission adopted a comprehensive farm-to-table strategy for a fair, healthy and environmentally friendly food system and biodiversity strategy to bring nature back into our lives.
While the EU food system has achieved high levels of food safety there is currently no horizontal regulatory instrument at EU level that can act as a guiding framework instrument to coordinate and drive changes in the food sector, to generally improve the sustainability of the EU food system.
This initiative aims to make the EU food system sustainable and to integrate sustainability into all food-related policies. It will set out general principles and objectives, as well as the requirements and responsibilities of all actors in the EU food system.
More specifically, it will set standards on:
- labeling related to the sustainability of food products,
- minimum criteria for sustainable public procurement of food, and governance and monitoring of measures.
- governance and monitoring of the measures.
The published public consultation aims to receive input from a wide range of EU and non-EU citizens and stakeholders, in particular primary producers, companies working in food systems, EU Member States, the European Parliament, civil sector organizations and non-EU countries. Small and medium-sized enterprises will also be consulted.
The deadline for the consultation is October 26, and the consultation can be accessed at the following link:
