Laguens' candidacy was proposed by the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe. After the two rounds of voting held in the last weeks, the Spanish veterinarian won against the other three candidates to take the presidency: John De Jong (American Veterinary Medical Association), Gani Enahoro (Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association) and Helio Blume (Federal Council of Veterinary Medicine).
Rafael Laguens will take office during the next World Veterinary Association Congress to be held from April 6 to 8 in Auckland, New Zealand.
