Meat packers and processors are still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, which exacerbated existing labor challenges coupled with a significant increase in consumer demand. Throughout 2021, worker shortages have persisted. The Meat Institute reports hearing from member companies challenged with 20% absenteeism on any day.

Another challenge facing meat production is congestion at ports. Addressing this crisis requires improving port efficiencies. Recent announcements by the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to extend hours of operations must be matched with an adequate supply of labor.

Lastly, since a federal judge blocked the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s New Swine Inspection System (NSIS) rule last spring, line speeds for swine plants that participated in NSIS have been slowed since July 1.

Together these challenges are raising the cost of meat for consumers.
