By November 11, African swine fever (ASF) had occurred in eight communes of the Trieu Phong district and Quang Tri town with a total of 127 pigs forced to be culled.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Tri, the reason the disease has re-emerged and has a tendency to spread rapidly is that livestock farmers have not implemented good prevention measures and often do not report outbreaks.
Pathogens spread rapidly after the floods at the end of October 2023, especially when people threw dead pig carcasses into the environment. The risk of the disease continuing to recur and spread widely is very high, especially in the context of re-stocking and increasing the number of pigs to serve the needs of the Lunar New Year 2024.
The People's Committee of Quang Tri province urges farmers to report epidemics, not to buy, sell, transport, or slaughter pigs that are sick, and not to throw dead pig carcasses into the environment.
