An annual workshop of the European Union Reference Laboratories for African and classical swine fever was held on June 2-3, 2014 in Madrid (Spain). The workshop was held in the EU Center for Animal Health Research (CISA-INIA). Representatives of 42 laboratories from 36 EU member states (over 100 people) participated in the workshop including Jose Manuel Sanchez-Viscaino, Head of the OIE Reference Laboratory for ASF; Marisa Arias, Technical Director of CISA; Francesco Berlingieri (DG SANCO).

The participants examined research results of the laboratories, results of inter-laboratory proficiency tests as well as plans and perspectives for further cooperation. The presentations demonstrated a number of issues on ASF and CSF epidemic situation in the member states, laboratory diagnosis of the infection, ASF and CSF epidemic investigations and control strategies.

In the end of the workshop the participants approved recommendations for further research of the Reference Laboratories. The basic recommendations included the necessity and timeliness of ASF and CSF early diagnosis in domestic pigs and wild boars, close cooperation and assistance of the EU leaders and veterinary services, thorough surveillance of wild boar population and its migration in the EU members.
