On July 4 this year consultations between Sergey Dankvert, Head of the Rosselkhoznadzor, and Bernard Van Goethem, Director of the DG Health and Consumers (DG SANCO) of the European Commission, were held in Moscow. During the meeting paths for recovery of pork product exportation from the European Union into Russia terminated due to African swine fever spread in the EU were discussed.

Although another round of negotiations allowed clarification of the parties’ positions, it did not unfortunately result in any positive decisions due to strict commitment of the European Commission to its position on regionalization, i.e. recognition of the ASF freedom in the total EU territory excluding restricted areas in 3 EU member states where ASF outbreaks were officially reported (Lithuania, Poland and recently joined them Latvia).

Reshape of the Rosselkhoznadzor’s opinion can be facilitated by the facts objectively supporting disease freedom in the countries distant from the outbreak sites and applying effective biosafety measures. Nevertheless, given that minimal monitoring examination is carried out outside the ASF affected countries no one can give guarantees about the virus not being introduced in the territory of the neighboring states.
