From the beginning of the year to August 15, 83 outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) have been reported in Russia: 44 in domestic swine and 39 in wild boar, according to a review by the Information and Analytical Center of Russia's Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision.
The most outbreaks have been detected in the Kostroma region, according to the survey. Since the beginning of the year there have been 10 ASF outbreaks in domestic pigs in the Kostroma region and 8 outbreaks of ASF in wild boars.
The ASF situation in Kostroma
The majority of outbreaks in domestic pigs were detected in private subsidiary farms. In addition, an ASF outbreak was detected on the production site "Shuvalovo-3" of pig-breeding enterprise "Shuvalovo" in the Kostroma district. All 6 thousand pigs kept on this fattening facility were culled.
"The supposed source of ASF in the region is wild boar, which is confirmed by their excess number in the entire region and in districts, where centers are established. It is connected with the summer period and people visiting forest areas to pick berries and mushrooms," explained in the territorial department of the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision.
