Acording to the Russian Institute for Agricultural Market Studies (IKAR), import of pork in the Russian Federation is growing rapidly despite an active increase in the production of meat in the country. Experts of IKAR attribute this to the fall in world prices for pork and, in particular, the devaluation of the Brazilian real. Brazil was the largest supplier of pork last year, with 78% of the total import quota.
According to data of the Federal Customs Service of the Russian Federation for the period from 1 January to 27 March 2016, the imports of pork to the Russian Federation amounted to 47,300 tons, which is 1.6 times more than in the corresponding period last year.
