The detection of genetic traces of African swine fever (ASF) virus in processed pig products indicates that infected animals have been slaughtered and processed, revealing insufficient measures to combat ASF.

ASF virus genetic material was identified in pig products produced by meat processing enterprises of the Voronezh region and sent to the Kaluga, Orel, Volgograd, Novgorod, Moscow and Pskov regions. This fact is of particular concern, since it creates additional risks of uncontrolled spread of the infection.

As practice shows, the main reasons for such incidents include introducing restrictions on the movement of pigs too late following ASF outbreaks, insufficiently reducing the number of wild boar, illegal trade of live pigs and pig products, and failures in biosecurity, among others.
