EUFMD Commission was represented by Dr Ulrich Herzog, CVO Austrian and EUFMD Chairman, Dr Nigel Gibbens, Vice Chairman and UK CVO, and Dr Keith Sumption, Secretary of the EUFMD Commission. The commission was created under FAO umbrella for the purpose of coping with strategic tasks in the field of this dangerous disease control.
The issues discussed at the meeting dealt with high priority measures for FMD control and its spread to the countries bordering affected countries as well as necessity to develop and popularize the FMD Global Control Strategy.
Yevgeny Nepoklonov stressed the importance of creating buffer zones which will prevent the disease spread to free areas and the expediency of their establishment in three areas of concern: Transcaucasia, Far East and Middle Asia. Dr Mereke Taitubayev, Chairman, Committee of Veterinary Control and Supervision, remarked that Kazakhstan had been fighting FMD for a long time already and in the past year no FMD outbreaks were registered there. Herewith it is necessary to perform timely and proper vaccination and monitoring of border areas. Although the key factor is that neighboring countries are affected, that’s why Kazakhstan is still in a high risk zone. FMD control problem can be solved only by means of international cooperation and coordination of efforts at the regional level as well as direct interaction with international organizations. Nigel Gibbens underlined high value of the Russian initiative and potential of joint activities. Herewith he mentioned that it is necessary to attract FAO Regional Office in China, OIE Regional Office in Russia and OIE Sub Regional FMD Coordination Unit Office to the task solving. Ulrich Herzog attracted the colleagues’ attention to the programme Roadmap for FMD Control and informed about training courses conducted within the programme.
