On March 1, Deputy Head of Rosselkhoznadzor (federal service for veterinary and phytosanitary supervision), Konstantin Savenkov, and the Internal Veterinary Supervision Department of the Service held a videoconference meeting with industry representatives on the spread of African swine fever (ASF).
Tatyana Balagula, head of the Directorate for Domestic Veterinary Surveillance, informed the participants of negotiations on the entry into force of the Veterinary Rules for prevention, diagnostics, quarantine, and other restrictions aimed at preventing and eliminating ASF outbreaks approved by the Order of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture dated January 28, 2021 No 37.
Industry representatives expressed their concern about the ineffective work in eliminating outbreaks of ASF in 2020, the lack of measures to reduce the number of wild boar, and the underestimation of the economic consequences of the disease. They also noted that the main factor in ASF pathogen entry on large pig farms remains the human factor.
Tatyana Balagula noted that it was found that transporting pigs is often done without taking into account the requirements of compartmentalization. Vehicles from other organizations are allowed to enter pig farms, which can also introduce the ASF pathogen into the territory.
The participants of the discussion concluded that ASF elimination and prevention of its spread must be solved comprehensively: from strengthening biosecurity measures on pig farms to interagency cooperation at the regional and federal level.
