In 2020, the Russian livestock industry demonstrated a steady positive development trend both in the meat and dairy sectors. According to experts, the trend will continue this year as well.
According to data, the production of livestock and poultry for slaughter in live weight for farms of all categories reached 15.6 million tons, which is 3.1% more than the in 2019 (+472 thousand tons). The greatest growth is observed for pork with an increase of 8.9% (+446 thousand tons), which is due to the implementation of investment projects in this area and the expansion of export opportunities for Russian suppliers. According to Yuri Kovalev, General Director of the National Union of Swine Breeders, the annual growth rate will remain at 3-5% and the figure will increase to 5.8 million tons in live weight by 2025. Modern facilities continue to be built, which will make it possible to provide consumers with the most diverse range of products.
There was also an increase in the production of cattle (+0.3%) and poultry (+0.3%). The production of eggs totaled 44.8 billion eggs, including agricultural organizations, the index increased by 64.6 million eggs (+0.2%). As Sergey Lakhtyukhov, Director General of the National Union of Poultry Breeders, pointed out, the industry has been showing stable results in recent years, making it possible to fully meet the needs of the population and helps to reduce imports. Further development of domestic poultry meat consumption is possible by increasing the production of turkey and other niche products. The industry will continue to grow at a rate of 0.5-1% per year.
The key factors determining the positive dynamics in the domestic livestock industry are the active use of state support measures by agrarians, the formation of a breeding base and the strengthening of veterinary protection.
