The Russian National Union of Pig Producers presented preliminary results of the country's developments in pig production at a meeting attended by First Deputy Minister of Agriculture Dzhambulat Khatuov.

Pig production is the main engine of growth for meat production in Russia. Over the last 5 years, production in this sector has increased by 39% (1.5 million tonnes). The main growth was from commercial farms, which make up 88% of the market. In the first and second quarters of this year, the trend decreased slightly compared to last year due to an increase in production costs, particularly in feed costs, as well as the epizootic situation in several regions.

Thanks to government support, including the introduction of export tariffs on grains and oilseeds, the extension of short-term loans, and the prolongation of preferential loans for investments, the situation in the sector has stabilized. Thus, from January to October, the production of slaughter pigs (in live weight) totaled 3.9 million t (+35,000 t compared to the same period last year). According to the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, the sector will maintain positive dynamics and the volume of pig production will reach 5.5 million t in live weight by the end of the year.
