After four years of prohibition, the Italian Ministry of Health has authorized the sale of Sardinia's suckling pig "Doc" to Italian areas outside the island. The piglets must come from certified farms and be subjected to a heat treated before being exported from the island.
The piglets export ban off the island of Sardinia was imposed in November 2011, when a decree of the European Union suspended the authorization of exports of fresh meat and sausages because of the outbreak of African swine fever which affects the island since 1978.
