The Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration (SIECA) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) are consolidating their cooperation to promote market access for agricultural production in the region by implementing a regional chapter of the Public Policy Observatory for Agrifood Systems (OPSAa).

The Secretary General of SIECA, Francisco Lima, and the Director General of IICA, Manuel Otero, met at the Institute's headquarters in San Jose, Costa Rica, to make progress on this initiative, which will provide Central American countries with real-time information on agrifood production and trade, facilitate decision-making, and strengthen regional integration.

OPSAa, launched by IICA in 2022, is a digital platform designed to support policymakers, foster strategic alliances, encourage cooperation initiatives, and promote the exchange of experiences among stakeholders in the agrifood sector. With the establishment of a regional chapter at SIECA headquarters in Guatemala City, access to strategic data from both organizations will be enhanced, benefiting the countries of the region.

SIECA, as a technical and administrative body, works to facilitate the integration of its member countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama) and enhance their access to international markets.

With this initiative, SIECA and IICA reaffirm their commitment to strengthening public agrifood policies and developing mechanisms to promote the competitiveness of the sector in Central America.
