African swine fever threatens the territory of the Republic of Slovakia from the Czech Republic, Poland and Ukraine. According to the Slovakian Chamber of Agriculture and Food (SPPK), it is necessary that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development adopts a clear position regarding the additional measures urgently to prevent the entrance of ASF in Slovakia.
The President of the Hunting Commission OPK Humenné, Mr Jaroslav Dutko, proposes reducing the number of wild boars by up to 90%. “We need to reduce the wild fauna to the lowest possible level to avoid any pandemic.”
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Republic of Slovakia issued an extraordinary authorisation for the hunting of wild animals on January 10th. Nevertheless, according to the SPPK, this is not enough, and the situation must be addressed more vigorously in cooperation with all the institutions concerned.
