Evolution of Spanish piglet and pig imports from the Netherlands
Since 2016, the earliest year for which data is available, Spain has experienced sustained growth in Dutch piglet imports, with a cumulative increase of over 1000% between 2016 and 2024. In 2016, imports stood at just 191,900 piglets while in 2024 they exceeded 2.3 million. The most significant growth occurred in 2018 when imports soared by 202.4% compared to the previous year.
On the other hand, pig imports have been more volatile. Although only 2,040 pigs were imported in 2016, the number surged in 2020, reaching 50,042. The highest peak was recorded in 2022, with 94,217 pigs imported. However, the figure dropped to 30,032 in 2023, before rebounding in 2024 with 39,589 pigs imported, marking a 32% increase compared to 2023.
