In 2019, Spain became Europe's leading producer of animal feed. Swine feed production makes up 42% of the total for livestock species.
"For 2020, as a result of the new situation we are experiencing, we foresee a drop in production of around 3%. However, with this slight decrease and in line with European forecasts, we will continue to be the leading European feed manufacturer", said CESFAC's President, Fernando Antúnez, who pointed out that this anticipated decrease is accentuated by the drop in poultry feed demand.
Leonor Algarra, Deputy Director General of Livestock Production Resources, has also advanced the provisional figure for total feed production (which includes both on-farm feed production and industrial production), which grew by 7% in 2019 compared to 2018, to reach 39,586,000 tonnes. "In this way we are among the ten most productive countries in the world," stressed the Deputy Director General of Livestock Production, who recalled that the pending challenges of the industry include the dependence on certain raw materials from third countries, sustainability, the reintroduction of processed animal protein, and the search for new protein crops within Europe.
