In 2017, the Spanish meat production reached 5.03 million tonnes (with a growth by 1.4% with respect to 2016). From these figures, pork (the meat with the greatest production) grew by 1.6%, reaching 4.25 million tonnes, this entailing, one year more, an unprecedented historic level.
On the other hand, beef established its recovery trend started in 2014, and its production reached 641,003 tonnes (0.6% more than in 2016), and lamb/goat meat dropped by 1% with respect to 2016, reaching 125,487 tonnes.
Regarding the production of meat products, it grew by 1%, reaching some 1.4 million tonnes.
In 2017, another landmark was reached: a new Spanish meat foreign trade record, as €6,000 million of sales to markets of all the world (a volume of more than 2.3 million tonnes of meat, offal and processed products) were exceeded for the first time, with a very positive trade balance of 477%, a figure that very few relevant economic sectors can boast of, and that helps to alleviate our country’s traditional commercial deficit.
The growth in foreign sales was by 2.5% in terms of value and by 9.4% in terms of value with respect to 2016, this showing that the exports of products with a greater added value and at a better price increase.
Spain was already one of the first pork exporters in the world, together with Germany, the USA and Denmark, with sales amounting 1,554,981 tonnes of pork with a value of €3,608 million (another record, as €3,500 million in sales have been exceeded), this representing a growth by 4.4% in terms of volume and by 12.5% in terms of value. Very positive figures have also been reached regarding processed products: 197,818 tonnes (+8,3%) and €1,267 million (+10.1%).
Regarding beef, the meat and offal exports balance was positive too, reaching a record figure of 171,953 tonnes exported (+1.4%), whilst regarding their value, €610 million were reached: 5.3% more than in 2016, securing the progress made since 2015.
