The National Plan against Antibiotic Resistance (PRAN), coordinated by the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS), has once again organized the European Day for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics. The aim of this day is to raise awareness of the threat that antibiotic resistance poses to public health and to encourage the prudent use of antibiotics.
According to the acting Minister of Health, José Miñones, since the PRAN began, Spain has become the country with the greatest reduction in the consumption of veterinary antibiotics and the third in human health at the European level. Spain is currently recording a 17% reduction in antibiotic consumption in human health and a 69.5% reduction in animal health.
During her speech, the director of the AEMPS, María Jesús Lamas, highlighted in the field of animal health the updating of the antimicrobial sales surveillance system to comply with the new European regulation on veterinary medicinal products, as well as the creation of a cross-border working group between Spain, Portugal, France, and Ireland to improve the availability of antimicrobials and alternatives in the veterinary sector.
