Spain: Large increase in live pig imports in 2020

In 2020, Spanish imports of live pigs increased by 41.6% compared to 2019.

In 2020, Spanish imports of live pigs from the European Union totaled 2,769,850 head, an increase of 41.6% compared to 2019 and +114% compared to the previous 4-year average.

As for imports of breeding animals, in 2020 Spain imported 128,927 head. The number of finishing pigs imported totaled 1,779,097 animals, coming mainly from Holland (75%), Portugal (15%), and Denmark (7%).

Regarding pigs for slaughter, Spain imported a total of 861,826 animals, with the main countries of origin being France (37%), Portugal (31%), and Holland (13%).
