The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, will follow Sweden in presiding over the Council of the European Union, which will begin on July 1. The Swedish Minister of Rural Affairs, Peter Kullgren, has handed over the Presidency of the Council to Spain, after the end of the Council of Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries that ended today in Luxembourg.
Spain will work over the coming months to ensure a balance between food security and environmental, economic, and social impact. In agriculture, the priorities will focus on boosting and promoting new technologies in the agri-food sector, guaranteeing food safety, protecting health and the environment, promoting the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), as well as giving more visibility to the rural world.
To this end, Spain will hold two informal meetings in July and September. The first, in Vigo, will address the decarbonization of the fisheries sector and investments in sustainability. The second, in Cordoba, will address new technologies as a tool for more resilient agriculture in the face of climate change.
In addition to the Councils of Ministers scheduled in Brussels and Luxembourg, until December 31, meetings are scheduled in different Spanish cities that will focus, among other issues, on animal health and welfare, organic production, the promotion of rural areas, hunting, agricultural insurance, and plant health.
