As shown by data provided by Statistics Netherlands, there is a steady increase in Spanish imports of Dutch piglets from 2016 to 2024. While the largest increase occurred between 2017 and 2018, when imports almost quadrupled, since 2021 first semester imports have consistently exceeded 800,000 piglets, reaching more than 1 million in 2023 (1,018,958 piglets) and 2024 (1,130,148). So far this year, Spain has already imported almost 11% more piglets compared to the same period last year.
There was also a notable increase in Spanish imports of finishing pigs from the Netherlands, especially since the second half of 2020. During that period, imports went from 9,316 animals between January and June of that year, to 40,726 between July and December, an increase of 337%. However, since 2022, although the levels are still significantly higher than those recorded before 2021, they have progressively decreased, reaching 21,201 head between January and June of this year, representing a reduction of 16.84% compared to the same period in 2023.
