The data regarding the slaughter of animals during 2012 published this week by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture show that during last year the slaughter of pigs rose by 1.55% with respect to 2011, with a total of 42,391,369 animals slaughtered vs. the 41,743,363 pigs slaughtered in 2011. This increase in the slaughter of pigs has entailed a rise in pork production by 1.33%, going from 3.47 million tons in 2011 to 3.515 million tons in 2012.
In the case of other kinds of meats there has been a slight increase (0.42%) in the slaughter of fowl, with 706 million animals slaughtered and a poultry meat production of 1,382,651 tons in 2012 vs. 703 million fowl slaughtered and 1,373,604 poultry meat tons in 2011. On the other hand, the slaughter of cattle dropped by 0.24%, going from 2,314,752 in 2011 to 2,309,260 in 2012.
