The Spanish animal health and nutrition industry saw an overall growth of 1.49% in 2022 compared to the previous year, representing 1950 million euros in turnover, although the domestic market fell by 1.32% to 1215 million euros, while exports grew once again this year, by 6.52%, to 735 million euros, which now represents almost 38% of the sector's overall volume.
Catalonia, Castile and Leon, and Andalusia, in the lead
Regional data places Catalonia in first place among the Spanish autonomous communities once again this year with 32.49% (394.75 million euros), followed by Castile and Leon with 11.97% (145.44 million euros) and Andalusia with 8.72% (105.95 million euros), which in 2022 edged out the Aragonese community (8.28%, 100.60 million euros) for third place.
Products
For yet another year, pharmaceuticals (including premixes), biologics, and additives form the leading triad in this segment, with the three together accounting for more than 1000 million euros and representing more than 82% of all the industry's products.
Species
Dogs and cats topped the species list for the first time in 2021 and in 2022 it again takes the lead with 36.50% of the total of this segment, a direct consequence of the increase in the ownership of these pets, and the increasing consideration of these pets as another member of the family. Pigs were in second place with 23.56% and cattle in third with 19.80%.
