Spanish pork exports decreased slightly by 2.3% between January and September 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, reaching a total of 976,170 tons. This drop is framed in the context of significant changes in the main destination markets.
China still leading, but losing ground
China continues to be the largest destination for Spanish pork, with 403,936 tons exported in the first nine months of 2024. However, this figure represents a 7.3% drop compared to the previous year and a more than 62% decrease compared to the same period four years ago, when exports to China stood at 1,068,328 tons. Its market share decreased from 43.6% in Jan-Sep 2023 to 41.4% in Jan-Sep 2024.
The Philippines boosts its imports with a 24.2% increase
On the other hand, the Philippines stands out as the fastest-growing market, with a 24.2% increase in imports, reaching 143,477 tons. Its market share has grown significantly, from 11.6% to 14.7%.
Japan and the United Kingdom see moderate growth
Japan and the United Kingdom also recorded increases in Spanish pork imports. Japan saw a 4.9% increase, while the United Kingdom increased by 4.0%, consolidating their positions as relevant markets with market shares of 15.0% and 4.3%, respectively.
South Korea: the biggest drop
In contrast, South Korea saw the largest decline among the major markets, with a 21.4% drop in exports and its market share declining from 8.7% to 7.0%.
