In 2019 Spanish exports of agri-food products to China amounted to 2.28 billion dollars, an increase of 41% over the previous year, according to data from Chinese Customs.
The increase in 2019 was primarily due to increased exports of pork and offal, the main products, whose sales amounted to 1.26 billion dollars, representing 55% of total agricultural exports from Spain to China (in 2018 they represented 35.5% of the total). Pork meat accounts for 72% of pork product exports, compared with 24% of offal.
This significant increase of 67.7% in volume and 119.4% in value over the previous year (557,154 tons at a value of $1.26 billion) was due to the emergence of African swine fever in China in August 2018 and its rapid spread, which limited the supply for domestic demand. The greater increase in value, with respect to the increase in volume, also shows the price increase that these products have suffered during 2019 in the Chinese market.
China's total imports of global pork products rose by 45.3 % in volume and 81.4 % in value compared to the previous year, reaching 6.54 billion dollars, with a notable 117.4 % increase in pork meat value.
Spain accounted for 17.8 % and 19.3 %, in volume and value respectively, of total pig exports to China, making it the main supplier of pork in terms of value, followed by Germany, Brazil, the United States and Denmark.
